Inside the Mind of a Musical Genius:

For the Love of Music

A Conversation with Patrick Boylan by Lesley Pazdzioch

Introduction

In this week’s edition, I am thrilled to share that I had the pleasure of speaking with Patrick Boylan. He is a professional pianist and app creator, and his approach to learning and teaching music is both intuitive and transformative. Patrick’s journey from frustrated piano student to thriving multi-instrumentalist in Los Angeles is proof that music can be learned — and felt — in a whole new way. His story is also a powerful reminder of how music connects our emotions, sharpens our minds, and heals our hearts and souls.

Returning to the Core: Healing Through Presence, Practice, and the Body

In a world that constantly pulls us into performance, comparison, and overstimulation, there’s something radical about slowing down—about coming back to our bodies, our breath, and the quiet wisdom within. In this episode, we explore the sacred act of returning to the soul essence found within ourselves—a phrase that means so much more than grounding. It’s about remembering who you are before the noise. It’s about safety, simplicity, and the courage to be present with yourself, just as you are.

From Lessons to Liberation

Patrick began his love of music at an early age.  When he was 8 years old, he begged his parents for lessons. “Patrick, it’s a lifelong commitment. Are you sure?”  Little did they know at the time how true this would biome, and the impact on others.

Using an old piano given to the family, He spent the next eight years taking traditional piano lessons — and hated every minute of it. The repetition, the lack of creativity, the boring songs… it didn’t work for him. Sound familiar?

But years later, something shifted. He began exploring music differently — not by mastering one rigid piece of music at a time, but by improvising around patterns he loved, repeating small phrases, and experimenting freely. And just like that, he started learning — really learning — how to play. Also, what I believe impacts his ability to easily and almost effortlessly learn other instruments. Making it a total of 10 instruments. Impressive?

This method became the foundation for MuseFlow, his revolutionary music learning app.

MuseFlow: Rethinking Music Education

MuseFlow teaches piano through bite-sized, dynamic, and sight-reading-based learning. Instead of jumping straight into complex songs, users train their skills through adaptive practice, and the app responds to their progressIt’s not just music education. Patrick says, “We’re not just teaching notes — we’re opening the doors to emotional expression, self-confidence, and joy.

Presence is a Practice, Not a Destination

We often think of presence as a state we’ll reach when life is finally calm, but presence is a practice. A moment-by-moment return to now. In this episode, we unpack what it really means to choose presence over perfection.

The Emotional Connection

During our conversation, I shared something deeply personal: how music helped me heal during a time when I had lost a time when I’d lost touch with my emotions, my ability to think clearly, and I didn’t feel connected to anything, emotionally. Music became the bridge that helped me regain my mind and body, connection with my understanding of emotions and thoughts.

Patrick completely understood. “Music,” he said, “is the language of emotion. When you can technically play your instrument, it becomes a tool for self-expression — and that’s where the magic happens.”

You’ll also hear why this kind of awareness isn’t about control or doing it right—it’s about choosing love, again and again, even when discomfort arises. Whether you’re eight or one hundred and eighty-one, this is music education for the soul.

“The nervous system doesn’t respond to logic. It responds to lived experience. Presence is what teaches the body it’s safe.”

The Body Holds the Truth

Your body knows before your mind catches up. Whether it’s a tightening in your chest, a subtle gut nudge, or the quiet urge to rest, your body is always speaking. This episode reminded me that the journey home began in my body, not in my mind. We often see how trauma, shame, and disconnection can block that inner voice—and how gentle awareness can start to thaw what’s been frozen. Through breath, movement, and sound, you can begin to trust your body again. You can relearn what safety feels like—not just what it should be;

Returning to the Core

To return to the core is to reclaim the parts of you that know you are never broken. It’s coming home to your values, your essence, your natural rhythm. “Returning to a ‘Life Made Easier”  This episode invites you to consider:

  • What creates the inner balance, not just regulated?
  • Where in your life have you been striving instead of surrendering?
  • What would it feel like to trust your inner self for safety more than external validation?

Returning to the inner core aspects of yourself isn’t about doing more healing work—it’s about remembering that you are already whole underneath the noise. The next step is learning the principles of “Healing Forward.”

“Healing isn’t always a grand breakthrough. Sometimes, it’s brushing your hair slowly, or choosing silence over hustle.”

✨ MuseFlow Spotlight: Relearning Music, Reconnecting Emotion

When Patrick was eight years old, he begged his parents for piano lessons. “Patrick, it’s a lifelong commitment. Are you sure?” they asked. They had no idea how true that would become—not just for him, but for countless others.

Using an old family piano, Patrick spent eight years in traditional lessons—and hated every minute of it. The repetition. The rules. The lack of creativity. The songs he didn’t connect with. Sound familiar?

Years later, something shifted. Instead of memorizing and performing, Patrick began exploring music intuitively—improvising around patterns, playing with sound, and repeating small, expressive phrases. That playful approach became the foundation of MuseFlow: a music-learning app that breaks away from rigidity and brings learning back to the body, heart, and soul.
